Are You Tweeting?

I just wanted to let you know that I had sloppy joe's for dinner and my wife fixed them. They were great!

Who really really cares what I had for dinner? Do you know the answer to this? Here it is...EVERYONE!

Maybe not everyone, but many many people are out there day by day meeting new people online. They meet them based on similar connections like what we have in one on one live human interaction. Those connections could be a shared event, an ironic situation, a hobby, a mutual friend, and many other possibilities.

You can look at this concept simply like reality television. None of us know why we like it. We just do. We connect with the characters on the screen even though we've never met them.

Twitter.com ( http://www.twitter.com ) is one of the most powerful ways of sharing your valuable dinner plans with the world. Twitter is what is known as a micro-blogging service. A micro-blog is simply an online entry that is only 140 characters long. This is the same length as many cellular network's text messaging length.

Twitter has been growing in its quantity of subscribers exponentially over the last few months because of its increase in online popularity. Its functionality is simple. You can follow someone's micro-blog by simply clicking on "Follow" underneath there picture. You can post what is called a "Tweet" in the box that says "What are you doing?"

Another way to look at Twitter is like social-text messaging. When you send a text to 40404 (after you've registered your phone with Twitter.com) it will post that text to Twitter.com for all of your followers to see. Now all of your followers not only get to read that, but they themselves can reply to that post with there own post.

A great tool to find out what people are saying about anything is the search part of Twitter.com. It is available at ( http://search.twitter.com ). The search functionality will allow you to search all the "Tweets" from Twitter to find out what is said about any subject. In other words, you can find out live up-to-date responses to nearly anything going on in the world. I personally find myself searching Twitter before I even search Google to find out about events, conferences, and international products and services.

The biggest question I always hear about Twitter is "Why only 140 characters?" I often want to respond with another question saying "Why do you need more?"

Twitter.com offers the opportunity to connect with people and be precise in communication. It would be much easier if we could take the person that is always sending us long emails that we have to read through when all they are trying to say is you have a meeting at 2:35 today, and put them on Twitter, that would save us hours of reading time a week.

Twitter.com is where I have been connecting with hundreds of individuals who have been potential sales leads and just friends. As a business owner I see it as a must have part of the business in today's society.

Nice explanation

Hi, I like the way you explain what Twitter is all about. Although I am not a personal fan of this service, your article can be usefull to explain to others how it could be use, what's the purposes and what can be done with it. I think the mobile use of twitters is what makes it such a great tool.

Unfortunately, as with many other social or blogging tools/websites, The weakness resides in the users, not the technology.

There is also a concern about how easy it is to join and use theses services. One could imagine a teenager (or even a kid ) twitting too much, with details about where he goes, where she hang out, etc. Giving potential criminals info about thing they would have more difficulty to get otherwise.

Just a concern that could , alone, be addressed in a post of his own.

Great article.

Agreed

I would agree there is a potential that a teenager could Tweet to much and give out potential information that could get them in trouble down the line.

At the same time...I would not let that fear ruin me for these services. You are correct in saying the issue is in the user not the technology. I have been enjoying utilizing these services for quite some time. Even with my iPhone I can post exactly where I am at, and have no problem with that.

Where I come from is a point of view that says: Yes, the user is the issue, but instead of shutting down the system or modifying the system let's teach the user. The system is great for what it is. Let's teach people the proper usage of these systems, and how to protect themselves.

Understandably not all will hear or act on the teaching and training, but at that point it was offered. Then it is not the systems fault at any rate. You were not blaming the technology, but many people do. That is a misconception. It is the user not the technology that is the problem.
